Picking Our Own Strawberries at Shady Brook Farm

This past weekend, we ventured up the road to Yardley, Penn to pick-our-own-strawberries at Shady Brook Farm. When we lived in Philly a few years back, we always went to Lynvilla Orchards in Media to do our fruit and veggie picking, but now that we've landed in Bucks County, we're quickly discovering that we're surrounded by working farms and places to do our picking.

Shady Brook Farm was founded by T. Herman Fleming in 1913 in Andalusia, PA as a wholesale farm growing crops for markets in the Philadelphia area. Shady Brook’s main crops were radishes, celery, spinach, and beets. After years of buying up surrounding farms and expanding their operations, the farm opened its first retail market with pick-your-own strawberries in June of 1984. The following year the market was open through September selling corn, tomatoes, and other summer favorites. The farm is celebrating their 100th year of operation this year and is a must see if you're visiting Bucks County, PA.

When it was all said and done, we ended up picking about 18 pounds of strawberries on Sunday.

We froze more than half of the berries to use for snacks and in recipes later. With the other half, Warren made a scrumptious desert and I was finally able to utilize a low-sugar strawberry jam recipe that I've been wanting to use for a while now. We'll be posting these recipes next week, so be on the look out for them!
