Decorating With Books

We are firm believers that the decorative accessories you display in your home should be more than just something pretty to look at.  They should either possess sentimental value or serve a purpose of some sort.  We've found that by decorating with books, you can often meet both of those criteria in a single item. Take for example, this stack of The Hardy Boys books from our own personal collection at home.

I vividly remember receiving my first Hardy Boys book (included in this stack) as a Christmas gift from my piano teacher when I was just a young boy. I was immediately hooked, and hungrily devoured many more of Frank & Joe's adventures via books from the school library during the course of my childhood.  Since becoming an adult, I have begun collecting the books, and always feel a little tinge of excitement whenever I spot a vintage Hardy Boys novel at a yard sale, flea market, or used book store. And, of course, it always brings a smile to my face whenever I see the collection on my bookshelf at home. And I can't wait to introduce these classics to my own child(ren) some day in the future!

Of course, not all books in your collection have to be sentimental favorites.  Sometimes you just want to add a sense of warmth or a pop of color and/or texture in your space.  And vintage books can be an immediate, inexpensive way to do just that with their unique visual and tactile appeal. Conveniently, we actually have some great vintage book bundles and collections for sale in our Etsy shop!

And let's not forget the great practical purposes (besides the obvious enjoyment of reading) that decorating with books can serve as well . . . especially when displayed horizontally . . . like elevating a shorter lamp to optimal reading height or serving as a platform for a picture frame or favorite objet d'art. You can even stack large books next to a chair & use them as an end table.  The possibilities are practically endless!  See some of our favorite examples after the jump.
